Magic mushrooms are mushrooms that contain the naturally occurring psychedelic compound Psilocybin. After ingestion, psilocybin is converted in the body to Psilocin, which affects the brain and alters perception, mood, and thinking.

• Psilocybe cubensis – One of the most common and widely known species

• Psilocybe semilanceata – Also called liberty caps

• Psilocybe azurescens – One of the most potent species

• Psilocybe cyanescens – Known as wavy caps

General appearance

Magic mushrooms can vary in appearance depending on the species, but they often have:

• Small to medium caps (brown, golden, or caramel colored)

• Slender stems

• Dark gills underneath the cap

• Some species bruise blue when damaged due to psilocybin oxidation

Habitat

They grow naturally in different environments such as:

• Grasslands and pastures

• Forests and woodlands

• Areas with rich organic material

Many species prefer humid climates.
