Cocaine (“Coke”)
Cocaine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant derived from the leaves of the Erythroxylum coca. It typically appears as a fine white crystalline powder and is known for its fast-acting and short-lived effects.
When used, cocaine rapidly increases dopamine levels in the brain, producing intense feelings of euphoria, heightened energy, increased alertness, and a temporary boost in confidence. These effects usually begin within minutes and can last from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the method of use.
Due to its short duration, repeated use is common, which significantly increases the risk of dependence. Cocaine is highly addictive and can lead to both psychological and physical health issues.
Common side effects include elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, anxiety, restlessness, and paranoia. High doses or prolonged use can result in serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, or respiratory failure.
Cocaine is often found in unregulated markets where purity can vary, and it may be mixed with other substances, increasing potential risks.
The drug is classified as an illegal controlled substance in most countries, with strict legal penalties for possession, distribution, or production.
